Boxing Out Negativity, a community organization in Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood, hosted a bike ride demonstration for peace this past August. With over 700 riders in attendance, the event began with a cookout and showcased various community resources including free COVID-19 testing, back-to-school supplies, and mental health support.

The event was supported by the North Lawndale Athletic and Recreation Association (NLARA) and attended by many of its members, demonstrating the power of a community-based approach to violence prevention through sport. The event hoped to inspire young people and their families to explore healthy alternatives to gang involvement.

Member organizations of the NLARA all have a wide community presence, engaging with local government, schools, and churches. Through the shared identity of the association, community keystones can easily connect young people to a network of program providers.
